Much ado about abstract art has been dedicated to the subject of achieving empathy through imagery. For nearly a century of development in the modern and contemporary art histories, artists have experimented with using lines, colors, and gestures — combined often with a pursuit of minimalism — to convey their own emotions and elicit an emotional response from their viewers.
The Blank series is Sheng Xiao’s most ambitious works to date. Overtly defiant of the figurative aesthetics taught obiquitously across China’s art education system, the Blank series gets its name from Sheng’s removal of all traces of space and subject. Using nothing but color and composition, Sheng pursues the purest relationship between emotion and imagery. How does it make you feel?
