While Daoism passed down by Lao Tzu and Ruism passed down by Confucius are the two oldest religions in China, the most impactful religion in Chinese culture today is actually Buddhism, with an estimated 20% of China’s population being Buddhists.
Originally brought over from India during the Han Dynasty through trade relations on the Silk Road, much of Buddhist teachings in China have evolved over the centuries to become integrated into the Ruist and Daoist religions. As with many regimes of the 20th Century, the Communist Party attempted to systemically erase the imagery and practices of religion when they first came to power. But despite this impactful and short-lived attempt, the influence of Buddhism and many other aspects of traditional China survived the Cultural Revolution and quickly re-emerged after the passing of Mao.
