The legend of Cipango brought the founding of the United States.
When explorer Marco Polo was in captivity during the Venice-Genoa war in 1295, he wrote his memoir “The Travels of Marco Polo” that became Polo’s defining legacy as Europe’s leading authority on the cultures of Asia. Amongst many other accounts of his adventures, Polo described a mystical land of Cipango, a small island east of China with immense wealth and natural beauty.
Some 200 years later, an inspired Christopher Columbus set sail in search of Cipango and instead came upon the Americas. The rest, as they say, is history.
